Hey people of Hope,
I sold my long-time buddy a week ago. I took the money I got for him and said, “I have betrayed innocent blood!” as I threw it into the temple. That little Civic was always there for me, faithfully hauling me everywhere I desired without once leaving me stranded. I fixed him when he was broke and loaded him down, at times, with impossible cargo that he hauled without complaint. There was an unspoken mutual respect that laid the foundation for a certain type of bond that words fail to describe. The bond between a man and his Honda Civic goes deep and now….it is no more. Have you ever felt a sense of loss when something you care about goes away? How much more the loss of a person? Grief can sneak up and overwhelm you especially when you don’t understand the root of your underlying sadness. There’s a process to work through when you experience a terrible loss, and central to it is the reality of God’s possession of you for all eternity if you’ve trusted in Jesus. Jesus said, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10:28–30) The bottom line is this; you will lose things and people on this earth, but you’re eternally connected with the living God……and that profound bond is the foundation for healing from any loss.  Ok, Ok, maybe I exaggerated the grief over selling my Civic but hopefully you get the point.
