Hey people of Hope,

I was reminded this week of a conversation I had with a mentor of mine about 35 years ago. I was 20 and he was nearly 30. We usually met and talked at McDonalds and on one particular meeting, after he asked me how I was doing, I launched into my usual complaining mode. “I hate school! I can’t stand this! I never get that! Etc. etc. etc.” He had a beard and long hair and I’ll never forget him staring at me for a minute and then asking, “Can I share something about you?” Before I could answer he said with restrained anger, “You complain all the time!” “Do you realize that when you complain, you’re saying, ‘God – I hate your will for my life!!!’?
I was absolutely dumbfounded, all I’d ever been exposed to throughout my childhood was complaining and there was something about it that comforted me. Yet here was this guy calling me on it for the first time in my life….to this day I can still see the table, the brick wall behind him, the road to the right of me and his Jesus-looking face. The apostle Paul wrote, “Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe.” (Philippians 2:14-15) In other words, if you want to be outstanding for Jesus in this crooked and depraved generation where everyone grumbles and complains…..stop grumbling and complaining!” To this day when I’m tempted to grumble and complain… I remember that conversation.
